The Master's Degree in English Applied Linguistics is a master's degree in English-language studies that is both research-oriented and professional. Its aim is to train applicants to become autonomous and operational linguistic specialists in most fields of theoretical linguistics (general culture of the the domain, overview of linguistic thoughts, phonology) and applied linguistics (language acquisition, didactics, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, English for special purposes, pragmatics, etc.) in four semesters.

Teaching is in-person and will be divided between Université Sorbonne Nouvelle (Nation Campus) and Université Sorbonne Paris Nord (Villetaneuse Campus)

Course structure

This course is built in partnership with Sorbonne Paris Nord University (USPN) whose campus is stiutated in Villetaneuse where several classes will take place.

This master's degree trains linguists for positions in several domains linked to English-speaking studies among which:

  • Assistant professorship at University (after completing a PhD)

  • Teaching English in a secondary school (especially if they obtain the Agregation exam)

  • Teaching English for non specialists (LANSAD)

  • Language instructor

  • Linguistic engineering

  • Pedagogical engineering in language (after DU or an M2 in pedagogical engineering)

It is recommended that students hold a B.A in English or LEA or Linguistics with a C1 level in English. Holder of a B.A. in other subjects than English will have to bring provide evidence of the C1 level in English by means of a language certification covering all four language skills (written and oral comprehension + written and oral production).

Any student with an undergraduate degree can apply through the MonMaster platform. Their application will be reviewed by a committee.

Organisation générale des études


The M1 et M2 are structured around a common core of courses taught on both campuses (Department of Enlgish of the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Nation Campus  and Université Paris Nord-Villetaneuse Campus. These include courses in anglophone studies/ methodology, writing workshops etc.) as well as classes taught by the services of the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle (digital culture, research…).

In addition to this core, there are specialized courses to choose from, that depend on the course followed. They cover the major areas of linguistics (discourse analysis, phonology, lexicology, didactics and language acquisition). These seminars take place either on the USN campus (Campus Nation) or on the campus of the Université Sorbonne Paris Nord (Villetaneuse campus). The choise of seminars is made according to each student's project.

Echanges internationaux

The course European YUFE alliance, of which Université Sorbonne Nouvelle is a member, as well as the of which the USPN is a member.

Studying abroad

The course allows students to participate in international mobility programmes such as Erasmus, MICEFA or YUFE for a semester or a year. Courses taken abroad at partner university are validated on the student's return on the basis of the grades obtained when abroad.
