Ageing and Gender in Contemporary European Cinema

du 8 septembre 2026 au 9 septembre 2026

Organisation :

MOINE Raphaëlle (USN)

Présentation :

This scientific event is the final conference of the AGE-C (Ageing and Gender in European Cinema, 2023-2027) research program, in which five universities are participating: Goethe Universität (Frankfurt), Università degli Studi di Udine), Babeș-Bolyai University (Cluj-Napoca), King's College (London), and Université Sorbonne Nouvelle. Funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung as part of its “Challenges and Potentials for Europe” program, AGE-C explores the relationships between ageing, old age, and gender in contemporary German, Austrian, British, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Romanian, and several post-Yugoslavian states cinema, from both a national and transnational perspective.

The program includes:
-  A presentation and discussion of the qualitative-quantitative database developed as part of the project, which compiles comprehensive information on representations of ageing in European feature films (fiction, documentary, animation) released between 2014 and 2023. Its film tagging system, designed using both inductive and deductive approaches, was developed based on critical reflection on key concepts of aging and old age drawn from cultural gerontology and film studies on ageing, as well as a exhaustive review of the different cinematographies from 2014 to 2023
- A summary of the results achieved by the five national teams on the corpora for which they were responsible.
- A series of case studies, conducted from a comparative and European perspective, which will focus on prominent themes related to ageing and its gendered dimension in films, on the relationship between genres and modes of representation of age, and on the visibility of ageing in events that publicize and promote films (festivals, awards).
- A round table with professionals and representatives of institutions and associations involved in promoting diversity and combating ageism, ageist stereotype and ageist prejudices in France and Europe.
